The Luxi 3-in-1 Mattress Review

If you are serious about sleep, then you need to consider the innovative new mattress from Luxi. This product is marketed as the most affordable luxury mattress available on the market. Luxi are run by a father-daughter team on a mission to make the world sleep more comfortably. We’ll be focusing on their signature Luxi 3-in-1 Adjustable Mattress.

So, what makes Luxi stand out? Well, two things in particular. First, Luxi have engineered a layer in their mattress that is made from individual pillars of foam. Not only does this allow for a little more spring than the typical foam mattress, but  each individual pillar can also be condensed as you lie down, contouring to your body to offer extra support and reduce motion throughout the night. Second, the mattress also comes with interchangeable covers, each of which has a different firmness rating. Not only that, but the covers are split down the middle so that you and your sleep partner can each enjoy a separate firmness level.

This mattress promises to be one of the most unique on the market. Provided, of course, that Luxi live up to their own hype. There’s only one way to find out. Read on…

Comfort and Feel

Normally when we start looking into the comfort and feel of a mattress, we go to the customer reviews. The only challenge is that most mattress companies only have good reviews on their sites, requiring us to dig into the darkest corners of the mattress internet to find a few honest takes. Unlike most mattress manufacturers, Luxi displays all their customer reviews, even the bad ones. Only a company that is supremely confident in their product would display poor reviews on their website, so we give them credit for their confidence. It certainly doesn’t hurt that a full 87% of the reviews were five stars and most of the negative reviews were related to delivery woes or problems with the free pillows that Luxi offers. In general, people love Luxi’s mattresses.

When it comes to comfort, most folks say that this is the best bed they have ever slept in. Most people love the interchangeability of the covers and firmness settings. And Luxi scored highly in in pressure relief and support as well. The three firmness options should suit every type of sleeper, but it is important to note that different body types will experience this mattress differently.

Motion Reduction

Unfortunately for the Luxi, the individual foam pillars that support pressure points and contour to the body also spring back into place when you move around. The majority of the reviews we found state that motion reduction was a problem. If you sleep with a partner that tosses and turns, then all those bouncy pillars will become an an issue. This is a disappointment, since Luxi cite motion reduction as one of the key selling points of these foam pillars. Yet, they appear to have the opposite effect.

It seems that Luxi have sacrificed motion reduction in order to boost the comfort and feel of their mattresses. However, if your old mattress was a waterbed, then you will think this motion reduction is superb! Like all mattress issues, it ultimately comes down to individual preference and you can’t please everyone. On the plus side, the Luxi is adjustable. So even when you do suffer from motion transfer issues, you can always try a different configuration.

Delivery and Set Up

Luxi delivers their mattresses for free. They arrive compressed in a cardboard box and are delivered straight to your doorstep. Delivery generally takes 8-10 business days. Once you have received and opened your Luxi mattress, it should fully expand within 24-36 hours (but you can sleep on it before then). Make sure to put your mattress on a flat and even foundation. The Luxi mattress will work well on a boxspring (with or without a frame), an adjustable base, a platform frame, or a slatted frame.

Off-Gassing

Once you open your Luxi and it begins to expand, you will notice a slight “new mattress” smell. Off-gassing is a natural part of owning a new mattress. Natural and organic mattresses often smell the most and the Luxi is no exception. After 12-36 hours the smell should either be quite faint or completely gone. We always recommend using a mattress protector. Once that and a fitted sheet are in place, the smell shouldn’t be noticeable.

Off-Gassing Rating: 4.65/5

Temperature

The Luxi 3-in-1 has a top layer made from the insulated pillars that fold and spring back as you move, but do not fold all the way back into the foam layer and leave a little room between you and the mattress. This increases air flow beneath the body to help you stay cool all night long. Customer reviews certainly seem to back up Luxi’s claims that their innovative air flow foam cools users as they sleep. Many people who used to sweat through their old mattresses experienced sweet relief on the Luxi.

Edge Support

Thanks to the pillars on the top layer, the edge support on this mattress is quite good. If you sit down on the edge of this mattress, you won’t slide off. The pillar support goes right to the very edges, ensuring that you will never wake up on the floor again. Given that the engineers behind this bed clearly thought long and hard about edge support, we have to score them above average in this category as well.

Edge Support Rating: 4.8/5

Materials

One of the primary reasons that we chosen to review the Luxi 3-in-1, along with every other product on this site, is because it utilizes organic, natural,  and CertiPUR-US Certified foams. This mattress uses both CertiPUR-US certified foams and natural latex.  CertiPUR-US is a certification program administered by a not-for-profit organization.

CertiPUR-US certified foams are:

✓ Made without ozone depleters.

✓ Made without PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (”Tris”) flame retardants.

✓ Made without mercury, lead, and other heavy metals.

✓ Made without formaldehyde.

✓ Made without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

✓ Made with low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality.

Luxi are a little cagey about the precise nature of their materials and only state that they have combined point elastic technology with traditional foam in a unique style that allows for maximum support and airflow. Since they have patented their sleep technology, we can’t really expect them to divulge all of their secrets. What we can say is that their 10 inch mattress is comprised of four layers, the bottom three of which all appear to be varying densities of foam.

The ‘miracle’ component in this bed is the top layer, which you can take off and switch for a softer firmness setting. Luxi says that they use premium quality materials infused with their own design to make these toppers.

The Layers:

3.5” Support Balancing Technology: A one-of-a kind Visco elastic foam pods layer that allows compression, pressure relief, and contour.

1” Of Memory Foam: This layer provides additional pressure relief for sleepers and acts as a transitional layer between the latex and foam pods.

1.5” Of Dunlop Latex: Designed to provide cooling and comfort that addresses all sleeping types. The latex layer is aerated to allow for better air flow and a cooler sleep.

Those are the 3 layers that can be adjusted to suit your personal comfort. 3.5” of polyurethane foam provides a base that serves as the foundation and support for the entire mattress.

Trial and Warranty

The Luxi 3-in-1 comes with a hundred day risk free trial. They also offer a thousand night pledge. If your Luxi disintegrates within a thousand nights, they will replace it for free. Sounds good, right? Well, a thousand nights only works out to about three years. The mattress guarantees that we typically encounter are much longer. Luxi’s warranty also covers defects on the mattress against normal wear and tear for a full 10 years, which is a bit shorter than the lifetime warranties that litter the market today. All of which makes us a bit wary of the durability of Luxi mattresses.

Customer Reviews

Tonya J May said:

“I looked extensively online for a new mattress, but couldn’t find one that I thought my husband and I would both like until I found Luxi. I have my side of the bed on soft, hubby’s is medium. I am a side sleeper with fibromyalgia. The soft side is nice and soft, but still supportive and comfortable. The mattress is also super easy to customize too! We also got 2 pillows, and they are perfect. Supportive, yet squishy and they hold their shape beautifully. We are happy customers!”

Others were not so happy:

“By far the most comfortable mattress I’ve ever slept on. I’ll never go back to spring mattresses. My only complaint is that the foam is rather fragile. When trying out the different firmness sides, my husband tried to pick up the mattress by grabbing one of the nobbies that make up the “soft” side and it tore clean off. We tried to be more careful by picking up the mattress from the sides, but could feel the foam tear. That was rather disappointing, but other than that we liked enough to buy a second one. We’ll just avoid flipping it.”

Some were more mixed:

“I’ve had the Luxi mattress for 2 weeks now and I like it overall. It comes set on medium, I tried that for 2 nights and just kept tossing and turning. It was too firm for me. I changed it to soft and like it much better! Its still not as soft as I would like it though. It is supportive but soft. I guess I am so used to my old mattress that I sunk down into (not in a good way). My husband has kept it on the medium side and he likes it, but is debating on changing it to soft, just to test it out. So far we like it, but I wouldn’t say that I love it yet. I will give it the full trial. I think I just need to get used to a new mattress. I certainly am sleeping much better than I was on my old mattress.”

Given all that difference of opinion we have to leave you to make up your own mind. Overall please remember that the Luxi scored 89% of its reviews as five star reviews. The good far outweighs the bad. However, we are not sure if making bad reviews so easily accessible on your web page is either incredibly brave or incredibly foolish. We do respect it though. Brave move.

Overall Value and Recommendation

The Luxi high performance and luxury adjustable mattress starts from $899 for a twin size, making it an affordable luxury item. But don’t forget that it fell short in terms of endurance and durability. This is not the mattress you want to buy to last a lifetime. This mattress should last ten years at best. You need to weigh that against the price and decide if it is worth it. We think that if you are going to make that big of an investment in your sleep time, you should consider a company that offers a longer guarantee.

Overall we do recommend this mattress to people who need to support individual pressure points and don’t mind a bed that isn’t fully cloud soft. There’s no denying the ingenuity of Luxi’s design. So, if you want to try an innovative new way to sleep, then the Luxi 3-in-1 might be the mattress for you!
