Comfort and Feel

Latex For Less is an eco-friendly mattress made entirely from organic materials. The mattress is flippable and each side has a different firmness. One side features a fire barrier made of natural wool and a layer of natural latex with a medium firmness feel. The other side also features a natural wool fire barrier, but it’s layer of natural latex has a firm feel. The different firmness levels on either side of the mattress is a result of the latex used. The firm side has 6″ Dunlop latex overlaying 2″ Talalay latex, while the medium side has 2″ Talalay latex overlaying 6″ Dunlop latex. This mattress has a sinking feeling, but with a quick bounce back as a result of the latex. It is almost like memory foam, but better. This mattresses provides ample comfort and support for almost any sleeper. The only question will be which side you prefer.

Motion Isolation

Light sleepers tend to wake up at the slightest sound or disturbance. That’s why motion isolation is an important feature in any mattress shared by multiple people. Generally speaking, latex mattresses can isolate movements to a significant extent but aren’t ideal. According to the makers of Latex For Less, their mattress can isolate motion significantly more than the average latex mattress. While thicker mattresses typically minimize more transfer than thinner ones, this mattress does a remarkable job given the relatively thin design. Sure, there are mattresses out there that offer better motion transfer than Latex For Less. However, no latex mattress that is this thin comes remotely close. A pleasant surprise.

Motion Transfer Rating: 4.6/5

Edge Support

If you sleep on the edge of a Latex For Less mattress, you will  feel compression. Although sleepers will not necessary fall off of the mattress, this might be a deal breaker for many couples. Latex mattresses tend to provide less support than models with springs or coils. Now due to the fact that the mattress has two sides and firmness levels, the support varies. And since to this mattress is a mere 9 inches thick, the edge support can waver. Are there mattresses with worth edge support out there? Sure, but Latex For Less still disappoints in this category.

Edge Support Rating 2.9/5

Off Gassing

Off-gassing is common in new mattresses. Depending on how they are made, some mattresses may have a slightly longer lasting and more noticeable smell (although it isn’t harmful or toxic).  Latex mattresses do off-gass, but most tend to produce less odour than those made exclusively of foam. That’s certainly true of Latex For Less mattresses. There is a slight odour, but nothing compared to some of the other mattresses that we have reviewed. As always, this smell should be gone within 24-48 hours.

Off-Gassing Rating: 4.65/5

Temperature

The materials used to make this mattress offer strong temperature neutrality. Depending on the weather, the mattress can adapt and keep the sleeper either warm or slightly cool. Latex mattresses tend to retain less body heat and, as a result, they sleep cooler than mattresses made from memory foam. Latex breathes well, largely attributed to it’s open cell structure that circulates air easily. Some owners also claim that the Latex For Less mattress is a heat trap in the winter that sleeps fairly warm. So, the mattress should work well in every season. That’s hard to find.

Materials

One of the primary reasons I reviewed Latex For Less (and every other product on this site) is because it utilizes organic, natural, and  CertiPUR-US Certified foams. This mattress includes organic cotton and natural latex.  CertiPUR-US is a certification program administered by a not-for-profit organization.

CertiPUR-US certified foams are:

✓ Made without ozone depleters.

✓ Made without PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (”Tris”) flame retardants.

✓ Made without mercury, lead, and other heavy metals.

✓ Made without formaldehyde.

✓ Made without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

✓ Have low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).

Latex For Less is an eco-friendly mattress, made entirely from 100% organic materials. The two types of latex used in this mattress are Dunlop and Talalay. Latex is derived from the sap of a rubber tree and possesses elasticity. It is this elasticity that allows the mattress to conform to the shape of the body. Most latex mattresses are soft, yet firm. Talalay latex is soft and airy, while Dunlop latex is firm and dense. Talalay was used in the comfort layer of the mattress to provide the medium firmness feel, while Dunlop was used in the support layer. However, if you flip the mattress, Dunlop latex will assume the position in the comfort layer to make the mattress firm, while Talalay is used in the support layer.

Now, let’s dive in deeper to see how these materials are used in the construction of a Latex For Less mattress.

Cover: Built with organic cotton, the cover is soft and breathable. Cotton is also hypo-allergic, ensuring that those suffering from allergies can sleep comfortably. The cover is also quilted with all-natural wool, which creates a gentle feel that provides the sleeper with immediate comfort.  As an insulator, wool helps to regulate the sleeping temperature in correspondence to the season. When the weather is cold and dry, the wool absorbs moisture and keeps a layer of insulating air next to the skin. When it is warm, that same absorption layer soaks up perspiration, allowing the body’s natural cooling system to work better.

Medium Layer: This is also referred to as the comfort layer. It is made up of 2” of Talalay latex, a lightweight material that’s soft yet responsive. This gives the mattress the medium firmness feel. However if you flip the mattress, it will be at the support layer.

Support layer: This is made up of 6” of dense Dunlop latex. This section makes for a solid foundation when oriented below the Talalay layer. Once flipped, it becomes a firm comfort layer and it is best suited for those who want to feel squarely positioned on their bed.

All of these organic and natural materials this makes Latex For Less one of the top eco-friendly mattresses on the market.

Customer’s Reviews

ClaraO, a verified customer wrote this review

‘After much research and having had a latex topper on my old mattress, I knew I wanted a full latex mattress. This was the best investment I had ever made. Great price. It is the most comfortable mattress you will ever sleep on. All the aches and pain are gone when you sleep on this latex mattress. Best sleep I ever had. Highly recommend nothing compares to a latex

‘This is a big improvement over my old inner spring mattress. I hope to change all of the mattresses in our house, soon’

Overall Value and Recommendation

The Latex for Less mattress is an ideal choice for eco-friendly mattress lovers. It has a double firmness option that is suitable to almost all types of sleepers. However, its ho-hum edge support may be discouraging to some customers. If you sleep on your mattress alone or you and your partner don’t roll around much in the bed, the poor edge support won’t be an issue. The price of the mattress is also relatively low compared to other eco-friendly latex mattresses.

Latex For Less is a mattress that I would recommend to anyone who:

  1. Has an allergy to chemicals.
  2. Enjoys sleeping in a bed that conforms to their shape but without sink in.
  3. Want an affordable luxury mattress.
  4. Wants a mattress that will last.
  5. Aren’t sure about the firmness level they want.
